Professionals of the Middle Ages

During the Middle Ages, a wide range of professional skills was needed. A trade was learned by observing, practising, and working alongside a more experienced craftsperson. Towards the end of the Middle Ages, guilds emerged, bringing together people in the same profession. These organizations supervised the quality of work and decided who was allowed to practise the trade.

The videos about medieval professionals feature historians and history enthusiasts at Häme Castle. The tasks are aimed at grades 4-6 of primary school.

Castles

In the Middle Ages, castles were centres of power, administration and defence. There were six medieval castles in Finland, of which Häme Castle and Olavinlinna are currently part of the National Museum of Finland.

Whose history?

Journalists from RARE visited the National Museum’s Another Country exhibition. In a series of four videos, they considered what Finnishness is and who belongs to it. RARE is a journalistic media for – and by – young people.

The tasks are designed for 12-16 year olds.

The videos and accompanying activities are suitable for lower secondary school students and upper secondary students.
