Accessibility in the museum
The museum buildings and courtyards of the Seurasaari Open-Air Museum have been preserved as close to their original condition as possible. As a result, accessibility varies significantly between the buildings. Most courtyard areas are easily accessible by wheelchair, but high thresholds, stairs, and the dim interiors of some buildings may present challenges. For visitors using manual wheelchairs, we recommend bringing a personal assistant to help ensure smooth movement around the museum area. Personal assistants are admitted free of charge.
History of the Seurasaari Open-Air Museum
The Seurasaari Open-Air Museum was founded in 1909 on an island that was a popular recreational site among Helsinki residents. The founders of the open-air museum intended to create a ‘miniature Finland’ that would showcase how people used to live in different parts of the Finnish countryside. Most of the buildings at the Seurasaari Open-Air Museum were selected for relocation to the museum on the grounds that they are representative of the housing culture of their home regions and demonstrate the rural way of life. Along with the buildings, some of the local items and belongings originally used in the buildings have also been moved to Seurasaari.
The Seurasaari Open-Air Museum is a growing and evolving museum, and its newest selection of buildings showcases Finnish cottage culture. The Seurasaari Summer Cottage and its yard were opened to the public in the summer of 2026.
