The Maritime Museum: past and present
The Maritime Museum of Finland is a national maritime museum whose mission is to preserve the history of Finnish seafaring and to disseminate knowledge about it. The museum collects and preserves artifacts, photographs, archival materials, and literature related to seafaring and boating.
The Maritime Museum of Finland opened to the public in 1981, but the process of building up collections for the museum began as early as the beginning of the 20th century.
Accessibility
The Maritime Museum of Finland and Maritime Centre Vellamo offers information and enjoyable experiences to everyone. The exhibitions in the conveniently designed building can be experienced by viewing, reading, listening and touching. Admission to the exhibitions is always free for under 18-year-olds and for everyone on Wednesdays from 5pm to 8pm.

Combine your event with a visit to the exhibition. Even a brief stop to explore history adds a refreshing change of pace to your conference day. Free admission to all of museum’s exhibitions is included in the venue rental fees for the auditorium (at least half-day rentals) and for the classrooms (four-hour rentals or longer).
Collections
The collections of the Maritime Museum of Finland are formed by objects, vessels, documents and images that provide a diverse view into the past and present of Finland’s maritime history.
The artefact collections include over 20,000 items and the picture collection 257,000 photographs. The document collection contains 150 shelf metres of documents, as well as 8,000 maps and drawings, mainly ship and boat illustrations.
