The conservation work at the National Museum of Finland began at the end of the 19th century with the conservation of archaeological finds in the chemistry laboratory. The conservation and research of archaeological finds continue to be an important part of the current object conservation work as well. In addition, the conservators work with a vast array of cultural-historical objects and underwater finds of varying materials.
Finds from shipwrecks and other wet organic material can be treated with the facility’s vacuum freeze dryer, which has a 5-metre-long chamber. The conservation of archaeological iron now employs a novel subcritical desalination method that enables the efficient stabilization of large numbers of finds.
