Time for the Sea is about the planet’s seas. It explores our blue planet, which could just as well be called Sea rather than Earth.
Time for the Sea examines the sea as the basis of life on Earth, and reveals some surprising perspectives. It explains how seas and oceans are born and how they play a crucial role in regulating weather and the climate. At the same time, the exhibition raises awareness of the importance of marine research for the future of humanity.
Visitors move through the exhibition from the seashore to the darkest depths. Time for the Sea also reminds us of our responsibility for the world’s seas and their future.
Time for the Sea is the first part of the Maritime Museum of Finland’s extensive overhaul of its main exhibition. The other parts of the exhibition, which deal with seafaring and maritime cultural heritage, will be opened in stages, with the next one set to open in late 2027. The exhibition series is part of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science (2021–2030), and an invitation to anyone who wants a better understanding of our blue planet.

New main exhibition under construction
The Maritime Museum of Finland is creating a new main exhibition. The main exhibition is a series of four themed exhibitions that will open one after the other. The exhibitions focus on the sea; ships; shipwrecks and their cargo; and maritime safety.
Spanning 1300 square metres in the museum’s largest exhibition hall, the exhibition will provide a diverse showcase of our maritime cultural heritage and seafaring history. The objective of our longstanding work to renew the exhibition is to build a cohesive entity that creates space for an open mindscape and bright horizons.
