The oldest parts of Häme Castle date back to the late 13th century. The castle was built for defensive purposes to make it as inaccessible as possible. The castle courtyard is paved with uneven natural stones, the stairs are steep, some doorways are narrow and low, and the interior is labyrinthine with many level changes and thresholds. Due to the castle’s great cultural and historical value, altering the medieval structures is nearly impossible. However, we are actively seeking solutions to improve the castle’s accessibility.
It is difficult to navigate Häme Castle in a wheelchair. The courtyard area of Häme Castle is paved with cobblestones. The first floor has individual steps and thresholds. Access to the temporary exhibition spaces and the second and third floors of the main castle is via stairs only. The ticket office and museum shop can be reached via a ramp from the castle’s inner courtyard, where wheelchair users can be dropped off by car.
Guide and service dogs are welcome. Otherwise, pets are not allowed in the castle.
The elevator located in the Crown Bakery within the castle’s outer wall building provides access to the bakery’s second floor, where the Häme Castle Museum Restaurant’s private dining rooms are located. There are no other elevators in the building.
A free self-service coat rack is located in the castle’s perimeter wall building. Lockers for personal belongings are available at the Häme Castle ticket office.

There is a ramp leading to the museum shop and ticket office from the castle courtyard. Visitors in wheelchairs or with limited mobility can be driven by car right up to the entrance. Admission to the shop is free.
A summer café is open at the castle at summer season in the Crown Bakery. The space is located at street level, but the path is paved with cobblestones and has a few small thresholds.
Navigating the castle with strollers or prams is difficult. There is a storage area for strollers and prams near the ticket office and museum shop.
The baby changing station is located in the accessible restroom in the perimeter wall building near the self-service coat check. The museum café has high chairs for children.
Public restrooms are located next to the ticket office, on the first floor of the Crown Bakery, and near the self-service coat check in the curtain wall building.
