Opening on 22 October 2026 at Olavinlinna – part of the National Museum of Finland – Eurydice (and Orpheus) pushes the boundaries of conventional theatre. Combining theatre, contemporary circus, music, and performance art, the production delivers a profoundly holistic experience, driven by the senses and active participation.
The historic Olavinlinna serves as the stage itself. Rather than taking a seat, the audience is free to roam the castle at their own pace, making the performance a unique and deeply personal experience for every visitor.
“This production represents a completely new direction for our programme. The creators are young, creative professionals in theatre, contemporary circus, and performance art. They are approaching both the castle’s spaces and the audience in an entirely fresh way,” explains Anne Paulasuo, Service Coordinator for the National Museum of Finland.
Orpheus and Eurydice is one of the most famous love stories in Greek mythology. In the original myth, the gifted musician Orpheus is devastated by his wife’s death and journeys to the Underworld to bring her back to the realm of the living.
While the tale has traditionally been told from Orpheus’s perspective, at Olavinlinna, Eurydice is given a voice.
Exploring the various forms of love, the work leaves ample room for the viewer’s own interpretation. On selected dates, guests can combine the performance with a pre-show wedding dinner held in the castle’s King’s Hall.
