Olavinlinna Castle is located on a rocky islet in the Kyrönsalmi strait. If you’re coming by car from the west, you should drive through Savonlinna’s Market Square and passenger harbor, where signs will direct you to Linnankatu and Olavinlinna. Those coming from the east can turn directly off Highway 14 onto Tottinkatu, where signs point to Linnankatu and Olavinlinna. Due to its island location, Olavinlinna does not have a street address. It is recommended to enter “Linnankatu 7, Savonlinna” as the address in your map app or GPS.
During the winter, parking is available in the immediate vicinity of Olavinlinna on Linnankatu. In the summer, additional parking is available, for example, along Tottinkatu (parking garage).
During the summer (June–August), please pay close attention to the special traffic arrangements in effect in the city and the traffic signs indicating them.
There are train and bus connections to Savonlinna from Helsinki (travel time about 4.5 hours). It’s about a 10-minute walk from the Savonlinna train station to the castle. It’s a 20-minute walk from the bus station.

We recommend paying by card. Ticket sales end 45 minutes before the castle closes. The entrance also closes 45 minutes before the castle closes.
Daily tours will be organised at Olavinlinna Castle in Finnish. Tours take place inside the main castle’s lower level and along the outdoor defensive walkways. Access to the towers is only permitted during guided tours, led by a guide. See other options in guided tours.
Events are arranged year around in Olavinlinna.
Olavinlinna was built in 1475 for defensive purposes on the rocky island of Kyrönsalmi and was designed to be as inaccessible as possible. The castle’s courtyard is paved with uneven natural stones, the steps are steep, some doorways are narrow and low, and the interior is labyrinthine with many changes in level and thresholds. Due to the castle’s great cultural and historical value, it is almost impossible to alter its historical structures. The Cultural Heritage Act prohibits alterations to historical monuments. However, we are actively seeking solutions within the limits of our resources to improve the castle’s accessibility. Read more.
Public toilets are located near the ticket office at the top of a steep spiral staircase.
The accessible toilet is located in the castle’s main courtyard. Call 050 428 5542 to have it opened.
During the summer, museum visitors are served by Restaurant Linnantupa and the Olavinlinna scenic terraces. Private events and meetings can be held almost year around. Read more.

Olavinlinna is available for meetings, parties, and other events. Event reservations are handled by the sales department of Osuuskauppa Suur-Savo.
It is difficult to get around the castle’s floors with pushchairs or buggies; it is impossible during guided tours. Prams or pushchairs can be left during the castle tour, for example next to the self-service coat rack near the ticket office.
The nappy-changing table is located next to the ladies’ toilet. The Linnantupa café-restaurant has high chairs.
Olavinlinna’s goal is to provide a safe environment for both museum visitors and staff, both under normal circumstances and in exceptional situations.
