The Maritime Museum of Finland’s photo collection contains approximately 257,000 photographs. The collection features, among other things, sailing ships and motor vessels; work and leisure on board ships; group photos of crews; the activities of the Finnish Maritime Administration (including icebreaking, pilotage, and lighthouses); as well as ports and cargo handling. Notable individual subcollections within the collection include the sailing ship photographs compiled by Captain Sten Lille and the maritime rescue photographs from the Neptune Rescue Company.
The Maritime Museum’s photo collection is managed by the National Board of Antiquities’ Photo Collections unit. Part of the Finnish Maritime Museum’s image collection is available through the Finnish Heritage Agency’s online service at museovirasto.finna.fi(ulkoinen linkki), and all materials in the image collection can be examined at the Finnish Heritage Agency’s Collection and Conservation Center (Kanervantie 6, Vantaa).

The Finnish Heritage Agency has made the image collections available on Finna—including images from the Maritime Museum’s collection—for free use under a CC BY license. The images may be used freely, provided that the source is credited: the photographer’s name (if known), the Maritime Museum of Finland’s image collection, and the Finnish Heritage Agency.
