Häme Castle is Finland’s only medieval brick castle. Maintained by the National Museum of Finland, the castle is open to visitors all year round. Häme Castle offers a glimpse into 700 years of history – from its days as a Swedish defensive fortress to its time as a women’s prison – as well as exhibitions and guided tours. An admission ticket grants access to the castle’s interiors and exhibitions. Häme Castle also has a museum shop, a private dining restaurant and a summer café.

Drivers

You can reach Hämeenlinna in no time from Finland’s largest cities: the trip takes an hour from Helsinki, two hours from Turku, and just 45 minutes from Tampere. Hämeenlinna’s downtown area stretches out on both sides of the Helsinki–Tampere highway. Take the ramp leading to downtown Hämeenlinna (Exit 25 from the north and Exit 24 from the south).

Parking lots near the Castle

• Drive along Tampereentie and turn onto Castle parking lot.
• Park your car at the Museo Militaria parking area.
• Walk approximately to Häme Castle’s northern wooden or southern stone bridge.
• Cross the bridges on foot — you have arrived.

Parking in Hämeenlinna City Centre

• Park in the city centre and walk approximately 10 minutes to the castle. See the map(ulkoinen linkki).
• Route: first walk along Tampereentie, then turn onto Kustaa III Street.
• Continue to the southern stone bridge and cross it on foot — you have arrived.

You can reach Hämeenlinna in about an hour by train and just over an hour by bus from Helsinki, for example. It’s about a 30-minute walk from the Hämeenlinna train station. It’s about a 25-minute walk from the bus station in downtown Hämeenlinna to the Castle.

We recommend card payments. We do, however, accept cash in our museum shops and restaurants, and at ticket counters. Ticket sales ends 30 minutes before closing time.

Guided tours
Daily guided tours will be organised at Häme Castle.

Events are organised year around.

The oldest parts of Häme Castle date back to the Middle Ages, specifically the late 1200s. The castle was built for defensive purposes to make it as inaccessible as possible. The castle courtyard is paved with uneven natural stones; the stairs are steep; some doorways are narrow and low; and the interior is labyrinthine, with many level changes and thresholds. Due to the castle’s great cultural and historical value, altering the medieval structures is nearly impossible. However, we are actively seeking solutions to improve accessibility at the castle. The museum shop is open whenever the castle is open. The castle’s summer cafe is open only during summer season.

The facilities of Häme Castle and the museum restaurant, Hämeen linna, may be used to hold meetings, celebrations and other private occasions.

The baby-changing station is located in the accessible restroom in the main castle, near the self-service coat rack. The museum café has high chairs for children.

It is difficult to navigate the castle with strollers or baby carriages. There is a storage area for strollers and baby carriages near the ticket office and the museum shop.
