The Maritime Museum of Finland’s collections include approximately 20,000 items. The collections feature, among other things, navigational instruments, lighthouse equipment, ship’s gear, scale models of ships and boats, maritime-themed art, and seafarers’ personal equipment. The museum is also responsible for over a hundred workboats and pleasure craft—dating from the late 19th century to the present—that are part of the national collection, as well as other artifacts related to boats and boating.
A significant portion of the Maritime Museum’s collections consists of artifacts recovered during marine archaeological research. These artifacts include ship parts, various types of cargo, personal belongings of crew members and passengers, and nautical equipment.
Experts from the Finnish Heritage Agency responsible for the protection and research of underwater cultural heritage, in collaboration with the Maritime Museum, are in charge of processing and transferring underwater finds to the Maritime Museum’s collections.
